Flagler County hasn’t had a high school football team make a playoff appearance since 2010, and that was when Flagler Palm Coast was eliminated in the first round. Matanzas has never made the playoffs in its eight-year history.

But if 2013 was any indication, things on the gridiron are on the rise.

Wins and losses aside, FPC and Matanzas have reason to be excited about 2014.

FPC (4-5) had a roller-coaster season. The Bulldogs opened the season with a 59-13 lopsided win over Matanzas. FPC then lost two straight before winning three straight to stay in playoff contention. But the Bulldogs dropped their final three games (two in the district) to end the season below .500.

FPC is young, though. Very young. Quarterback Dalton Thomas began to show his playmaking ability and arm strength as his sophomore season came to a close. It could be a big junior year for Thomas under center.

Defensively, there is speed all over the field. Marcel Williams, Kyle Oliver, Josh Belle and Jimmie Robinson all return next season.

The one thing FPC will need to develop this offseason is its play at the wide receiver position. Also, who is going to fill the hole at running back after Dee Lumpkins and Devonti Emanuel graduate in May?
