A 14-foot, 2,300-pound white shark was tagged off the coast of Flagler Beach around 4:18 a.m. Sunday, according to ocearch.org.

The shark, named Katharine by ocearch.org, was originally tagged near Cape Cod, Mass.

According to the website, the shark has traveled about 64 miles over the last 24 hours. It has traveled about 1,984 total miles since being initially tagged.

The location of the shark is determined by a ping, which is determined when a shark’s dorsal fin breaks the surface of the water and transmits a signal to a satellite overhead. The transmission then sends back and estimated geo-location.

The shark, which is still labeled as immature, has been on a south-bound journey, and ocearch.org suggests the shark will continue south toward Daytona Beach.

"OCEARCH enables previously impossible, critical research for collaborating scientists around the world to advance science and STEM education," said Chris Fischer, founding chairman and expedition leader of OCEARCH. "That's our mission, which we accomplish by providing scientists with 15 minutes of access on a 75,000-pound capacity lift to conduct approximately 12 studies on mature, large sharks."

OCEARCH is a nonprofit organization that conducts research on great white sharks and other large, apex predators.
