Dennis McDonald, a former candidate for the Flagler County Commission and a frequent — and generally critical — voice at County Commission and Palm Coast City meetings, may run again this year.
“I don’t see anything that would deter me from that at this point,” he said.
McDonald, a Republican and member of the Flagler County Tea Party who ran for the Flagler County Board of County Commissioners in 2012, said he’d favor a greater community voice in government.
“Contrary to the way the majority of commissioners think now — that they’ve been voted in because the people think they know better for the people — that would never be my position,” he said.
McDonald has been busy this past year: he’s filed an injunction against Palm Coast about trees in Palm Harbor Shopping Center, and attended County Commission meetings where he decried the county’s move to replace a public referendum requirement on corporate tax breaks with a super-majority Commission vote and to give Administrator Craig Coffey the authority to close certain public lands, among other issues.
McDonald said matters that can be left to the public should be.
“Every time I look I see how much we’ve given up as individuals; that’s what we need to get back to: deciding the issue for ourselves,” he said. “I’m one of those guys back years ago who had the bumper sticker ‘question authority.’ It just makes it a better place to live.”
