The Rev. Sims Jones, of People Helping People and God's Love Ministries, opened offices in an outbuilding of the old Memorial Hospital last year to help local people find jobs and apply for services like food stamps. This year, he said, he plans to do more.
"Because of the economic situation, there are a lot of people I feel are in need of help," Jones said. "I've always liked working with children and senior citizens, but I'm seeing now that I'm going to have to broaden things."
Jones would like to offer hot meals for the elderly and set up transitional housing for people who are homeless, recently evicted or just out of jail, he said.
"A lot of people come in for food stamps, and they're living in their cars, or living out in the woods," he said. "They're not bad people, they've just fallen on hard times."
He would also like to increase public transportation offerings in the county — he envisions bus routes along State Road 100 and running from Belle Terre Parkway to S.R. 100 and Old Kings Road — and would like to work with whoever he can to make it happen.
“We need a bus system in Flagler County, so people can have a way to get to work, get to shopping, even get to help: You can’t get to the Health Department for assistance if you don’t have any way to get there,” he said.
In the meantime, People Helping People and God’s Love Ministries will continue helping local folks at the People Helping People Center, a certified Department of Children and Families substation.
“The needs of Flagler County are getting greater,” Jones said, “and I’m doing my best to help fulfill those needs in any way that I can.”
