Runaway driver
3:37 a.m. — Tomoka Oaks Boulevard. Suspicious vehicle. An Ormond Beach police officer was conducting a routine patrol when he noticed a pickup truck pulling into a business’ parking lot. Since the business was closed, the officer attempted to make contact with the driver.
The driver then exited his vehicle and made his way toward its front, at which point, according to the report, the officer instructed him to stay inside the vehicle. He didn't.
Once the defendant reached the front of the vehicle, the officer said he ran northbound through Tomoka Golf Club. The officer pursued the defendant on foot, but lost sight of him behind houses, according to the report. The vehicle was then towed because it had been abandoned.
Later, a witness called central dispatch to get information in reference to his vehicle, which the defendant had taken without permission. The witness told police he was hanging out with the defendant and some friends early in the morning at his house, when everyone except the defendant went to sleep. The witness told police when he woke up, the defendant and his car had disappeared.
The defendant told police he had taken the vehicle to get something to drink and panicked when the police approached him because he was driving on a revoked license.
The defendant was read his Miranda rights, arrested and charged with resisting a law enforcement officer without violence and driving while license revoked.
