The upcoming drama at Flagler Palm Coast High School is not the norm for the school’s theater department. Instead of a large production on stage at the Flagler Auditorium, teacher Kelly Nelson has scaled back for a black box, competition-style performance.
The cast of “The Bully Plays” is comprised of 15 students, all members of the thespians society.
“The Bully Plays” is an anthology which includes 24 10-minute plays that address the issue of bullying.
Nelson said she chose the show because not only is bullying as hot topic across the country, but there have been numerous fights at FPC as well.
But besides the play’s content, the set-up of the 10-minute plays has allowed for a first for Nelson. In the true spirit of experimental theater, Nelson is exploring the world of student directors. Agata Sokolska, Shawn Friday, Christian Galvis and John Kearney all take their hand at directing a couple segments of the show.
“I thought that they would bring a different perspective than I as an adult would bring,” Nelson said. “It’s something the students can really invest themselves in. It has been an interesting project, something that they can really play with.”
Part of investing in the show included learning how to and crafting masks and hats for props.
Nelson stressed that this project is different than plays in the past.
“It can’t be compared to the more serious plays such as ‘The Crucible,’” she said.
But when the play closes curtain Saturday night, there is hope that the project will live on. Nelson is in the process of organizing parts of the production to be performed at elementary and middle schools throughout the county.
The show will open 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7 and continue through Saturday with an additional 2 p.m. Saturday matinee, in the black box theater, at Flagler Palm Coast High School. Cost is $12 for adults and $6 for students. Teacher and students are half-price on Saturday.
