With the water bills threatening to go up, I’ve issued a decree in my family: No more showers. Instead, we’re filling the bathtub only once, and we’ll just take turns.
The cleanest person goes in first, the dirtiest last. Theoretically, even after four of us wash, the water will still be clean enough for the dirtiest McMillan to derive some benefit.
Also, to save some extra money, we’ve set all of our pots and pans out in the yard to catch rainwater. There are no city codes against it, as far as I know.
Finally, I have withdrawn the complaints I’ve sent to the city about my swale filling up with water. In fact, I’ve dammed up the culvert under my driveway and under my neighbor’s driveway so that I’ll have my own reservoir for emergencies. I’ll sell buckets of my swale water for half the cost the city is charging. A box of straws will be under my mailbox for a quick sip, if you’re in a pinch.
Written up
They say a thousand numbers is worth a thousand words. My son came home from first grade the other day with 10 sheets of paper taped together and rolled in a scroll. On these sheets of paper were written the numbers 1 through 1,000.
According to him, he set the Bunnell Elementary School record for the most numbers written in two days. I don’t want to call and check because I’d hate to learn this wasn’t true.
Just think of it: My own son, a record holder. This is a skill that will make him a lot of money someday. I could see him in the circus, in the center of the ring while horses ride around him. There are elephants riding the horses, and they’re engulfed in flames. And yet, there he is, calmly writing 996, 997, 998, and the crowd is biting its collective fingernail.
Volume 4
Of all the numbers and letters we published in the Feb. 6 issue, one stands out above the others: It was the No. 4, and it was found on the bottom right corner of the front page. It signified that the Palm Coast Observer is now 3 years old and entering its fourth volume of publication.
On behalf of Publisher John Walsh and the rest of the staff, thanks for reading.
