Students in Denise Gabriel’s art class at Belle Terre Elementary have been learning what it takes to be a world-renown artist. After studying the works and life of Vincent van Gogh, Gabriel’s students tried their hand at painting like the expert.
In order to recreate the consistency of paint that van Gogh used, Gabriel mixed laundry detergent into basic paint. Then students applied the paint with brushes and popsicle sticks using strokes similar to what van Gogh did.
Each class chose a different van Gogh piece to replicate and after painting, used oil pastel to bring out details in the works.
Gabriel said that what made is project extra special was that her classes were applying STEM. The science came in when mixing the paint; technology, because they students did online research on the artist and materials used; the engineering of putting the different parts of the project together; and math, because everything is proportional.
“they are taking an art project and problem solving,” she said. “The need to get the colors right and figure out what needs to be done next.”
Garbiel hopes to display the student van Gogh art the Flagler County Public Library and the Government Services Building, as well as the schools media center and front office.
