+ Volunteers needed to battle invasive species
Flagler County is looking for volunteers to combat an invasion of Flagler County’s River To Sea Preserve. You won’t need a ray gun or an anti-matter shield. Just a few garden tools will suffice.
In recognition of National Invasive Species Awareness Week, Flagler County is assembling an army of volunteers to do battle with the likes of Brazilian Peppers and Silver Thorn 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 2, in the parking lot of the River To Sea Preserve on A1A, in Marineland.
Volunteers will learn how to identify certain invasive species, assist in their removal, and will have opportunities to assist with mapping current invasive species in the park. Volunteers of all ages are welcome.
The location of an RV campground for many years, the park has many introduced plant species that, if left in place, can have a detrimental effect on native species at the preserve.
Participants should wear gardening clothes and are encouraged to bring any GPS devices, including phones with GPS applications, for the mapping effort. RSVP is requested, but not required to attend. Call 313-4064 or email [email protected].
Gamble Rogers Memorial State Recreation Area at Flagler Beach is also battling a nefarious supervillain, the invasive exotic plant known as the Brazilian pepper. This Justice League of weeders is known as the Pepper Pickin’ Crew: Laura Ostapko, Patty Steman, Libby Broadhurst, Dan Rutkowski and Joanne Polan. To join the team of super volunteers, call 527-2086.

+ Garden Club announces selection of the month
Eugene and Ann Tontodonato, of Comanche Court, have been as recognized as the February Selection of the Month by The Garden Club at Palm Coast.
They moved to Palm Coast from Westchester, N.Y., in 1990, and bought a house on a corner saltwater lot in “sailboat country” off Cimmaron Drive.
What catches your eye this time of year is the neatly trimmed Shilling hollies, Indian hawthorn, and palm trees which include Sabal, Washingtonian, European fan tail, roebellini, and pindo. Eugene does all the trimming himself and even gets on the roof to trim a tall Southern magnolia that is planted along the foundation of one side of the house.
A collection of large century plants with their sharp toothed, yellow edged leaves are given space in a succulent garden along with a cluster of Spanish bayonet yuccas.
They like to add colorful annuals to their landscape, but have a challenge in choosing plants that the local deer don’t enjoy.
