The Flagler Playhouse will continue its 2012-2013 season with the Steve Martin comedy, “Picasso at the Lapin Agile,” opening Friday, Feb. 22, for 10 shows, including a special Thursday night show, Feb. 28. Show times are 7:30 p.m. and Sunday matinees at 2 p.m.

The adult humor comedy asks the question: What if Albert Einstein and Pablo Picasso had once met and somehow sensed they were about to change the world through their science and art? The year is 1904, and both men are destined to be the biggest names in their fields in the 20th century. They meet in a bar: the Lapin Agile, in Montmartre, Paris.

“Steve Martin sets up a joke in the first act that you might not laugh about until the second act, the icebox laugh,” said Director Jerry Curti.

Curti is a retired Flagler County educator returning to the Flagler Playhouse after a long period of absence. He has done directing and acting work at Limelight Theatre, in St. Augustine, where he coincidently played Freddy, the bartender in the same play.

“Having Jerry come in not only bringing his expertise and a whole different style, but also getting the collaborative effect from the cast has been incredible,” said Pat Love, president of the Flagler Playhouse. “He doesn’t know these people and their limitations. There were no pre-conceived notions. It was a blank slate, and he has been able to pull a tremendous amount from the cast.”

The cast list includes Brent Jordan, Jimmy Rogers, Jenica Fredrickson, Beau Wade, Ariell LeMoine, Rich Lacey, Troy Rossi, DeShawn Matos, Angela Fain, Patty Rogers and Frank Anello. The crew behind the scenes is stage manager Cynthia Frederickson, set designer/builder Bill Frederickson, costume designer Nancy Howell, lighting designer Jason Correia and Arthur Paquette, who runs the sounds and lights during performances.

“It’s really an ensemble show — everybody has a little piece — even the small parts are integral to what is going on in the play,” Curti said. “(The cast) has put in a tremendous amount of work — they try things and are willing to take risks.”

Tickets for the show are $15 for adults and $12 for students. Call 586-0773 or visit flaglerplayhouse.com.
