Matanzas falls to Ponte Vedra in extra innings
It was a pitcher’s duel for seven innings Friday night between Matanzas and Ponte Vedra, but in the top of eighth inning, the Lady Sharks rallied for three runs to beat the Lady Pirates, 3-0, in a rematch of last year’s District 4-5A championship game.
Matanzas (4-3) played an errorless game through the first seven innings, but in the first extra inning, it fell apart for coach Sara Novak’s team.
“(It was a) very disappointing loss after working so hard for seven innings,” Novak said. “But we need to hit, and we are struggling right now.”
Ponte Vedra pitcher Avery Geehr limited Matanzas to just three hits on Friday. She walked one and struck out 14.
Matanzas starting pitcher Amber Johnson allowed 10 hits, walked one and struck out three.
Catcher Gabrielle Prickett went 2-for-3, including a double in the bottom of the eighth inning to give her team a chance to score, but the bats went silent after her hit.
Though the loss hurt, Novak said she is excited for how much her team has grown since last season.
“We will get stronger and better from here by seeing our weakness, which is connecting our bats right now,” Novak said. “This game was another big pitching battle, and it was really nice to see Amber (Johnson) give it her all on the mound tonight and pitch her game.”
