I have an innate reaction to situations to do something about them immediately. In one such instance many years ago, I asked a friend for advice relating to a situation that I was facing and considered to be a life crisis. He gave me the best advice I have ever received — advice that I pass on when the opportunity presents itself.
“Don’t do anything,” he said.
Being the Type A person I am, that was hard to conceive. When something happens, I have the feeling I have to fix it now! Over the years, I have come to appreciate the fact that if I don’t do anything, in many cases, the answer of what to do will come to me in due time. This is also called “acting on a problem” rather than “reacting to a problem.”
