I have received two pieces of great advice in my life. The first was on raising our daughter. I was told by a very dear friend that our job was to teach her all the good things we wanted her to have in life: love, morals, ethics, etc.
But, my friend said, when she became 14 years old, our job then was to teach her how to leave home. We taught her to balance checkbooks, about credit reports, work ethics — anything and everything we knew to teach her about preparing for the rest of her life. We did that and have a beautiful, caring, smart, professional daughter!
The second advice was about my career. I was told that if I did not wake up every morning excited to go to work, and if I did not love it and if I did not feel that I was making a difference, to leave it. Life is too short to spend the majority of your day somewhere you are not able to leave your footprints.
