Mlinac’s seven 3s propels Matanzas past Nease
Matanzas’ Madison Mlinac came off the bench Friday night on fire. Mlinac, a sophomore, nailed seven 3-pointers to lead Matanzas past Nease, 70-66.
The Pirates were on fire all night, including Rahim Booker’s 3-pointer that gave Matanzas (4-12) the lead for good down the stretch.
Matanzas was on fire all night, as they converted more 3s (12) than 2-point baskets (seven). The Pirates went 20-for-26 from the free-throw line.
Mlinac finished with a game-high 26 points.
Senior Ivan Tsabak also nailed three 3-pointers and scored 21 points. This was the first time this season that two Matanzas players scored more than 20 points.
Lady Bulldogs clip Seabreeze
The Flagler Palm Coast girls basketball team continued its January hot streak, beating Seabreeze, 38-36, and improving to 4-0 in January.
Tied at 23-23 after three quarters, FPC outscored Seabreeze by two points in the final quarter of play to secure the win.
FPC (15-4) was led in scoring by Armani Walker’s 12 points, nine rebounds, eight steals and two assists. Shanika Gardner added eight points, grabbed five rebounds, one steal and two blocks.
Boys soccer: FPC 1, Nease 1
In a playoff preparation game, Flagler Palm Coast and Nease battled to a 1-1 draw on Friday night.
The Panthers took an early 1-0 lead as FPC started the game sluggish, said FPC assistant coach Reg Monsanto.
The Bulldogs’ defense tightened, however, and FPC went into halftime trailing by just one.
In the 60th minute, FPC striker Johnny Osorio buried a penalty kick to even the score. FPC continued to press late in the second half but couldn’t net the game winner.
FPC outshot Nease, 15-5. Bulldogs keeper Austin Davis tallied five saves.
FPC (12-1-2) has two away games remaining until next week’s District 2-5A tournament.
This season, FPC has outscored its opponents, 58-13.
Osorio leads the team in scoring with 23 goals and 12 assists.
PAL baseball signups to take place until Jan. 23
Registration for the Flagler Police Athletic League baseball season is open until Jan. 23. Registration is $45, and includes uniform shirt and hat.
Register online at FlaglerCountyPAL.org or at the PAL office, 5400 E. State Road 100, next to Flagler Palm Coast, in the old School Board building. Evening registration will take place from 6-8 p.m. Jan. 9 and Jan. 23, at the PAL office.
March 2 is Opening Day.
