Some viewed it as an upset, but Matanzas boys soccer coach Rich Weber said his team’s 2-0 win over Nease on Tuesday was the result of the team gelling at the right time.
Matanzas (9-5-2) upended No. 3-seeded Nease to advance to the semifinals of the District 4-3A.
“It was a big upset in most people’s eyes, but the team is gelling at the right time,” Weber said Tuesday after the game. “The mid-season adversity has shaped us for a good run in a deep district. I’m proud of the boys.”
Matanzas took a 1-0 lead in the 60th minute on a counterattack when Nick Weber found Dakotah Casale, who took a first touch out of the air and found the back of the net.
Matanzas took a 2-0 lead when Josh O’Hara cut past the Nease keeper and slotted the ball into the net.
The Pirates (No. 6 seed) advance to play Creekside (No. 2 seed) 7 p.m. Thursday.
A win Thursday night for Matanzas will secure a state playoff berth and a spot in the district finals.
