Race car encourages reading at VPK
The “Just Read Race Car” took a pit stop Jan. 18, at he Adult Education Early Learning Center at Bunnell Elementary. The car is part of a partnership with Just Read Florida! and the Daytona International Speedway to promote reading and writing during Literacy Week Florida.
“We want to make sure we are reaching down to our very beginning readers and make them excited about reading,” said Laurie Lee, reading specialist with Just Read Florida! and the Florida Department of Education.
The race car is one way they are doing that. The idea is to motivate students to read and the theme of “take the lead and read,” uses an analogy of a race car driver crossing the finish line first.
“We know that reading makes us smarter and we want our kids to be successful, so we want them to take the lead as well,” Lee said.

Curves walks for St. Jude
Curves of Palm Coast broke in the new year with a Walk-A-thon Jan. 19, to benefit St. Jude Children's research hospital.
The walk was kicked off with a free zumba event with Ms. Florida Senior America Rebecca “Zumba Queen” LaNasa.
“Our goal is to further strengthen women in any and all ways possible; giving our members a common cause to work for has brought forth untold joys and benefits for us all,” said Stefanie Funk, Curves manager/owner.
