+ Garden of the Month selected in Pine Lakes
Teresa and Walter Riznyk , of Lago Vista Place, have been recognized as the January Selection of the Month by the Garden Club at Palm Coast.
The Riznyks moved to Palm Coast from Connecticut in 2009.Teresa does most of the gardening and is constantly learning what plants grow best under the various conditions in their landscape. The lot is on a short cul-de-sac off Wellington Drive and borders a freshwater canal.
The multiple plantings of cacti draw your eye to the yard as there is a large clump in a raised bed at the driveway and a fence row of offshoots border the left side of the property.
Colorful foliage of green and yellow arboricola (Hawaiian elf schefflera), stromanthe, Hawaiian Ti, copperleaf, and raspberry flowering bouganvillea brighten the landscape during the winter months. They have planted many types of palms under the canopy of several large oaks such as: windmill, canary, Queen, pygmy date, and Mexican fan. Other plants include: bird of paradise, crinum, agaves, roses, hibiscus, bottlebrush, clerodendrum, sago and crossandra to name a few.

Maine watercolor artists to teach classes
Ocean Books & Art is offering a free watercolor art demonstration 6-8 p.m. Jan. 30, by Harry Thompson and Jill Previti, of Kennebunkport, Maine.
Following the demonstration, they will present three 6-hour classes for anyone wanting to learn watercolor painting. The demonstration is free and the class fee is $100 per person. All events will be held at 200 S. Oceanshore Blvd., in Flagler Beach, across from the Flagler Beach Pier.
Besides being highly recognized watercolorists in New England, Thompson and Previti each own popular art galleries in Kennebunkport. Frank Gromling, owner of Ocean Books & Art, met the Maine artists when they visited his business in early January. Immediately impressed with their artistic talent and gallery experience, he began discussions which concluded with the artists agreeing to share their knowledge and talent through the demonstration and classes.
“Finding Harry and Jill has been a blessing because I have wanted to introduce watercolor art in my galleries, plus I longed to offer classes. They bring it all together in one great package,” Gromling said.
Classes will be from 9 a.m. to noon and 1-4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10, March 10, and April 14.
At the end of each class, the students’ art will be hung in Ocean Books & Art’s Wave Gallery and the work will be critiqued by Thompson and Previti. Family and friends of the students will be allowed to attend this event, where wine and cheese will be served.
To enroll, call 693-4882.
