It was nearly a perfect start for an All-Star team that has high aspirations of going deep in this year’s postseason.
The Palm Coast Little League Majors All-Stars (11-12 years old) put up four runs in the first inning en route to a 10-3 drubbing of DeLand on Monday night at a packed Indian Trails Sports Complex.
Palm Coast added another three runs to take a 7-1 lead in the top of the third inning, and the pitching staff did the rest.
Coach Kyle Berryhill said his team has worked really hard this summer to get ready for Monday night.
“As coaches, we felt like we had a good chance to be competitive,” Berryhill said. “All the boys love baseball so much — and they are a great group of boys. I was a little nervous they might press a little or try too hard rather than relax and trust their abilities.”
But that’ didn’t happen. Palm Coast had stellar pitching and timely hitting.
Starting pitcher Declan Mock hurled 4.1 innings, allowing just two runs on four hits to go with one walk and four strikeouts. Brock Underberg got two outs in the fifth inning to strand runners at first and second, and then Zachary Evans closed out the game in the sixth.
Palm Coast combined for 16 hits as a team, led by Cameron Becker, who went 4-for-4 with an RBI. Charlie Alfano went 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Evans went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, including a single, a double and a triple.
Palm Coast (1-0) continued play in the double-elimination tournament Tuesday night.
