Last week, the Georgia Aquarium Conservation Field Station received a report from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission about a Kemp’s ridley sea turtle in distress. Kemp’s ridley sea turtles are the rarest and most critically endangered sea turtles in the world. The sea turtle had reportedly been struck by a boat and then caught in a shrimp trawling net just south of Marineland.

Under the auspices of FWC, aquarium workers were asked to rendezvous with the shrimping boat and recover the injured sea turtle. The turtle was transported back to the field station and then down to the Volusia County Marine Science Center where they are hoping for her successful rehabilitation and eventual release.

To report injured or distressed wildlife in the state of Florida, please call the FWC’s Wildlife Alert hotline at 1-888-404-3922.
