Braylen Baldwin spun around and then heaved the cast net. Still a bit dizzy, he stumbled after he released the net and then regained his footing. He wasn’t catching any baitfish, though. The net landed in the grass. This was just a trial run.
It was a day of learning for more than 200 aspiring fishing enthusiasts on Saturday at Bings Landing, during the Flagler Sportfishing Club’s fourth-annual kids fishing clinic, designed for children ages 3-15.
At the clinic, the children learned how to tie an improved clinch knot and assemble a rod and reel. They were taught how to bait a hook and how to treat the creatures of the ocean.
Once the children go through all the exhibits, it’s time to cast.
“Probably the most exciting part of the whole day is to watch (someone) catch a fish — the first one they’ve ever caught,” said Capt. Chuck Gleichmann, president of the club. “It’s a super great experience.”
After some time on the pier trying to catch some fish, the kids received a goodie bag, a rod and reel, and then they get a hot dog and a water before the day is over.
Gleichmann said there were about 85 participants when the club began the clinic four years ago. It has grown to become one of the largest youth fishing clinics in Northeast Florida, with about 250 at this year’s event.
Because Flagler has prime fishing locations, Gleichmann said it’s important to teach the basics to youngsters.
“We live in such a beautiful place,” he said. “We need to work real hard to keep it as beautiful as it is today, and if this little bit helps — a kid not to throw a soda can or a bottled water or fishing line into the water — then I think we’ve done our job.”
The Flagler Sportfishing Club has more than 400 members and hosts two fishing tournaments each year. The next tournament will take place in October.
