If aspiring football players were going to learn anything during the three-day football camp put on by Matanzas High School and the Flagler Falcons Police Athletic League program, Pirates coach Jeff Nettles made sure he hammered home at least two points: get better and only worry about the things you can control.
That was the message Nettles — who is in his first year as Matanzas’ football coach — delivered during his pre-camp talk on Thursday evening.
There are two specific things you can control, Nettles told the group: effort and being a great teammate.
“Inside the white line is the work zone,” Nettles told the group of youngers, as he pointed to a chalk line that separated the concession stand area and the practice field behind Matanzas’ stadium. “When you’re in the work zone, you’re always running, moving.”
The camp, which was open to football players ages 5 to 15, began Thursday evening and continued Friday evening and Saturday morning.
Campers were divided up by age and cycled through several stations that taught the basics: receiving a handoff, throwing the ball, catching, working on the offensive and defensive lines, and blocking.
The camp was run by the Matanzas coaching staff with the help of several Pirates football players.
“I felt the camp was exciting and productive,” Nettles said. “I know my players, coaches and myself really enjoyed coaching it. It was good to see our players excited about helping others.”
