Making big plays under the lights on Friday night is still about a month away, but several Seabreeze football players shined bright during the daylight over the weekend at the University of South Florida Sling and Shoot 7-on-7 football tournament.
This was the first time Seabreeze has competed in USF’s 7-on-7 tournament, said coach Marc Beach.
The Sandcrabs went 8-4 in tournament play, losing in the semifinals to finish third out of 45 teams.
All of Seabreeze’s losses came on the final play of the game or in overtime, Beach said, including the semifinals loss, which came in third overtime.
Playing small-sided games, though, is a totally different dynamic than full-sided football, Beach said.
“It allows us to work on our passing game and compete versus other programs from around the state,” he said. “It also allows the defense to work together in the back seven.”
Beach said standout players on offense were Connor Blair and Charles Nelson. Defensively, Dorian Gonzalez, Reggie Wright, Mason James and J.T. Davis played well, he added.
With the tournament, Seabreeze has wrapped up its 7-on-7 play for the summer. Practice for the 2013-2014 school year begins Aug. 5 — two-a-days will be 3:30-5:30 p.m., and then 7-9 p.m.
