The International Distance Skateboard Association agreed this week to bring a distance race to Flagler County this winter. Tentative dates have been set for January.

“We created the association to give more opportunities to skateboarders and surfers and even the mainstream population,” said Founder Jonathan Strauss. “We know that the easiest thing to do on a skateboard is to push it, so we wanted to create something that was for everybody to get people more involved in the technical parts of the sport.”

The site inspection, which happened this week, was a direct result of Casey Ryan, product development manager of tourism development, and Luanne Santangelo, city of Palm Coast Parks and Recreation director, attending the National Association of Sports Commissions Symposium a few months ago.

Strauss’ goal for the Flagler race is to host a half-marathon distance that will stretch to the beach, giving participants the opportunity to experience the lifestyle of Flagler County.

“Flagler Beach has that cool surfer feel,” he said. “We want to be able to sell the city. We want to showcase things that will make people want to come back.”
