If they build it: Rotary Club grant to help build two sports fields
The Rotary Club of Flagler Beach announced earlier this month that it has been awarded a $24,600 grant to build two multipurpose sports fields in Bunnell.
The grant, provided by Rotary District 6970 and Rotary International, will provide funds for goal posts, irrigation, signage, dirt, sod and all other necessities to operate two full athletics fields, which will be constructed and maintained by the city of Bunnell.
The project is being led by city of Bunnell’s Judi Stetson and the Rotary Club of Flagler Beach’s Roseanne Stocker.
“This project will make all the benefits of organized sports available to a population of children who are underserved, at-risk and drastically in need of quality extracurricular activities,” Stocker said. “Having the fields and an organized league in this neighborhood will change lives and build character, leadership and responsibility through positive role models and a new sense of purpose.”
Flagler American Youth Football has agreed to run the football leagues at the fields and provide scholarships and uniforms for the children who cannot afford to do so. The league was founded by Dr. Curtis J. Shalit, a plastic surgeon in Daytona Beach, and his wife, Maria.
The project is estimated to cost $56,600 with financial and in-kind support from the following organizations: city of Bunnell, GW Carver Foundation, Flagler American Youth Football, Rotary Club of Flagler County, Rotary Club of Palm Coast, the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office, African American Cultural Society, and African American Caribbean Heritage Organization.
