Three people were injured and a horse was killed Thursday afternoon after a pickup truck and an armored truck collided on State Road 100, troopers say.
Mario Gomez, 50, of Orlando, was driving an armored truck westbound on State Road 100, approaching the intersection at County Road 305 around 3:20 p.m.
Kathleen Stevens, 55, of New Smyrna Beach, was driving her Chevrolet pickup truck and was towing a trailer with one horse on board. She was traveling eastbound on State Road 100, headed toward Gomez.
Traffic ahead of Gomez stopped to make a left turn on County Road 305, and so Gomez hit the brakes but was unable to stop and began to lose control, according to a report by the Florida Highway Patrol.
Gomez’s truck rotated counterclockwise and crossed into the eastbound lane directly into the path of Stevens. The left front of Stevens’ pickup truck then struck the right front side of Gomez’s armored truck.
Stevens’ vehicle ran off the road onto the south shoulder of State Road 100 and overturned on its right side.
Stevens was transported to Halifax Medical Center with serious injuries, the report states.
Gomez and his passenger, Edwin Perez Feliciano, 27, of Orlando, both suffered minor injuries, the report states. Gomez was transported to Florida Hospital Flagler.
The horse in Stevens’ trailer was killed in the crash.
Charges are pending.
