Florida’s students showed an overall improvement in FCAT and end-of-course assessments, according to a release from the Florida Department of Education.
In many areas, Flagler County advanced in state rankings for its FCAT scores, according to an analysis from Shawn Schmidli, coordinator of assessment, accountability and equity for the Flagler County School District.
Schmidli compared Flagler’s scores, as well as its graduation and dropout rates, to the rest of Florida’s 67 counties. In most areas where data was available, Flagler schools earned higher rankings than they did in 2012.
Statewide, student achievement on FCAT 2.0 Reading increased in grades 6, 8, 9 and 10, with grade 10 students making the most improvement. For FCAT 2.0 Mathematics, grade 4 saw an increase in student achievement, while inFCAT 2.0 Science, grade 5 also saw an increase and grade 8 remained the same.
“These results show that where we put our focus is where we see our progress,” said Commissioner of Education Dr. Tony Bennett in a statement. “While there are gains to celebrate today, we have a lot of work to do and it is not time to lower our expectations for success. We have a clear path forward as Florida shifts to the Common Core State Standards and an emphasis on helping all students think analytically and critically.”
