Survive and advance. That’s all the U15 Flagler PAL All-Stars needed to do Thursday night, coming back from two early deficits to knock off Sanford, 14-12, in an epic clash of wills at the Flagler County Fairgrounds in the District 13 championship tournament.
Sanford took an early 4-0 lead, but Flagler was able to respond with two runs of its own in the bottom of the first inning. Sanford got on the board again for a run in the second, and again, Flagler responded, making it 5-4.
Flagler’s bats really came alive after the second inning, taking a 14-6 lead into the sixth inning.
Sanford wasn’t going down without a fight, though, and plated five runs in the sixth to cut the lead to 14-11.
The Sanford team was able to plate one run in the seventh inning, but Flagler was able to hang on to get the final out and advance.
Flagler advances to the next round of the District 13 tournament, which is a double-elimination format.
Flagler plays noon Saturday, against the winner of the Southeast Volusia vs. South Daytona game. (That game will be played at 6 p.m. Friday.)
A win in the next game would put Flagler in the championship game, which will be played 9 a.m. Sunday. A loss, and Flagler will have to play an elimination game at 3 p.m. Saturday.
