Flagler County Sheriff Jim Manfre confirmed Thursday morning that his former undersheriff has until Friday to either retire or be Fired.
Cmdr. David O’Brien, who has been with the Sheriff’s Office for 29 years, was placed on administrative leave Wednesday and was given the choice to retire or be fired.
“(This decision) is not based on personality or politics — it’s performance,” Manfre said.
Manfre cited performance issues that led to the review of O’Brien’s work.
“Our goal is for everyone to be accountable,” Manfre added. “This is a crucial role in our organization, and we were not seeing improvement in (O’Brien’s) performance, and so this is the direction we decided to go.”
O’Brien, 49, said late Wednesday night that he wasn’t sure whether he’d retire or be fired.
“It’s been an honor to serve and protect the people of Flagler County for the last 29 years,” O’Brien said late Wednesday night. “I look forward to the next chapter in my career.”
Almost one year ago to the day, O’Brien was promoted to second in command under then Sheriff Donald Fleming.
“I have served under four sheriffs and understand that those that are in my industry are always subject to the political arena,” O’Brien added. “I admire the people I have worked with for 29 years, and I have formed some great relationships.”
O’Brien served as the second in command during Manfre’s previous tenure as sheriff.
