The anticipation was built up to see who would get the coveted crown the night of Tuesday, March 5, not in the Miss Matanzas competition, but more so in the Mr. contest, which had four contestants as opposed to two in the Miss contest. The contest was put on by the DECA program.
After a student vote, an interview with the judges, a talent portion and an impromptu on-stage question, Justin Punsalan and Sara Komanowski were crowned the 2013-2014 Mr. and Miss Matanzas.
Punsalan said the main thing he hopes to accomplish as Mr. Matanzas is for students, especially freshmen, to know they are not outcasts.
“Throughout high school, you will learn that everyone is unique for a reason,” he wrote in his bio. “High school is the time of discovery of yourself and the real world.”
Komanowski is a member of the varsity lacrosse, golf and girls weightlifting teams. She is also a member of the Matanzas jazz vocal ensemble and concert choir.
The first runner-up for Mr. Matanzas was Adam Pryor, the second runner-up was Travis Thompson, and the third was Josh Hobbs. Delayna Donohue was the first runner-up for Miss Matanzas.
Judges for the show were Alana Fitzgerald, Marc Dwyer and Jaclyn Centofanti.
