A tractor-trailer carrying cartons of cantaloupe caught on fire around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, near mile-marker 295, causing delays on Interstate 95 northbound for about an hour.

Jerry Forte, Palm Coast’s deputy fire chief, said at the scene that the fire likely started from a brake or tire problem.

“They were probably driving for a few miles with it and didn’t realize,” Forte said.

No one inside the cab was injured, Forte said.

Palm Coast Public Works crews were en route to the scene with heavy machinery, that way fire crews could break apart the trailer and extinguish the fire completely.

The middle and right lanes were blocked for about 45 minutes. Forte said another lane would open up as crews cleaned up the scene over the next few hours.
