Mock Trial team wins big

The Mock Trial Team of the Flagler County Teen Court brought home a historic win from its March 1 competition at the Clay County Courthouse.

The Flagler defense team won first place in its division of the competition, and the Flagler prosecution team finished second in its division behind Clay County.

Ben Jones won best prosecuting attorney and Melissa Boyles won best defense attorney. Calista Melendez, of the prosecution team, and Marcus Louis-Jeune, of the defence team, won best witness.

The prosecution team, whose trial ended with a hung jury, included attorneys Ravi Seetaram, Jones and Norah Mubarak as well as witnesses Melendez, Michael Vega, Jayson Dwyer and Ayden Craig.

The defense team, whose trial ended with a not guilty verdict, included attorneys Boyles, Ra’mel Adams and Lauren Traster as well as witnesses Ashton Craig, Daniel Prazeres, Haley Campanella and Marcus Louis-Jeune.

Jurors were Lanaysha Few, Shanteria Few, Naser Mubarak, Brandon Fagan, Monica Khazaal, Amy Cirelli, and Nina Jones. Clay County also seated jurors.

Jade Louis-Jeune acted as a clerk, and Naser Mubarak and Michael Vega were bailiffs.

The team was coached by attorneys Alicia Washington, Marc Dwyer, Matt McGuire, Ronald
Hertel and Circuit Court Judge Dennis Craig. Dayanna Lopez also assisted.

Anchor Boat Club cleans canal
If you live on a canal and looked out your back window on Saturday, March 2, you may have thought a number of boaters were suffering from motion sickness on the smooth canals. It might've looked like they were sailing at the north pole.

The dress was because of the weather, and the leaning over the sides of the boats was the members of the Anchor Boat Club participating in their annual canal cleanup in Palm Coast. 

New Jersey Club changes meeting schedule
The New Jersey Social Club of Palm Coast has made big changes to its meeting schedule. The club will now meet 1 p.m. the fourth Wednesday of each month, at The Knights of Columbus Hall, 51 Old Kings Road N.

The next meeting will be Wednesday, March 27. For more information, call 597-2199.

VFW collects shoes
The Ladies Auxiliary of Palm Coast Veterans of Foreign War Post 8696 is collecting sneakers and tennis shoes for Flagler County students in need from kindergarten through high school.

Anyone interested in helping can purchase new shoes and drop them off at the post, 47 Old Kings Road N. Shoes will be distributed through the S.T.U.F.F. Bus. Call 446-8696.

Relay for Life teams host fundraisers
The Phun Coast Parrotheads will host a Bunco Party 1-4 p.m. April 13, at Surfside Estates, in Beverly Beach. Tickets are $10, and prizes will be awarded to the winners.

Flagler Volunteer Services will host Wings & Wisdom Trivia Contest on Wednesday evenings in March and April, at Houligans. Cost is $15 and includes entry for one into the trivia contest, a wing combo, and a draft beer or soda. Trivia contest will be open to teams with 2-6 players.

NEVAEH will host a sing relay 6:30 p.m. March 23 and April 13. They will be looking for the next "Palm Coast Idol." Cost is $25 to enter as a singer. A $10 donation will be accepted at the door for those wishing to see the contest. Each night is limited to 20 singers. Winners from the two nights will battle for votes at the Relay For Life event May 11.
