Competitive track-and-field meets don’t just happen at the high school. Well, yes they do, for the most part. But they don’t always include high school athletes.
Last weekend, several area elementary schools teamed up to host the Flagler County Elementary Track Meet — a track-and-field competition among four schools: Old Kings, Rymfire, Belle Terre and Bunnell. Wadsworth didn’t participate. The teams practiced for six weeks leading up to the meet.
More than 275 student-athletes competed at the Flagler Palm Coast High School track. The Bulldogs track-and-field team volunteered as the officials for the meet.
Kenny Ford, of Bunnell, and Josh Ward, of Old Kings, were the minds behind the event.
“Kenny and I came up with the idea when we finished our youth wrestling season and wanted to offer something different for the spring for our kids to get involved in,” Ward said. “We recruited the other schools, and everyone was excited to take part in the day.”
What a fantastic way to keep the students involved in competitive sports — and to also develop them for track meets before they reach the high school level.
