+ County moves forward with jail expansion
Expansion of the jail in Flagler County could cost less than $15 million, according to tentative reports from architects.
For that cost, the overcrowded Flagler County Inmate Facility will be expanded by eight new pods of cells. The pods will be equipped with 260 cells in total and will be monitored by one main guard tower, said Craig Coffey, county administrator.
That model is meant to diminish long-term operating costs by reducing staffing needs, Coffey said. The current facilities will continue to be used. Coffey said once the jail’s capacity is expanded, the county should be able to implement a work-release program as well. Currently, there is no such program because many of the jail’s inmates are still awaiting trial.
The expansion would also increase support space, such as storage, kitchen and laundry space.
The project is still in its design stage, so these numbers are tentative. Once architects have finalized proposals, the design will come before the Flagler County Board of County Commissioners.
+ Plane makes emergency landing on Palm Coast Parkway
A single-engine plane that originated out of Phoenix East Aviation Inc. in Daytona Beach made an emergency landing at around 6.37 p.m. Wednesday, on Palm Coast Parkway westbound.
Mechanical problems with the plane’s engine forced its pilot, Raul Desouza, to make the emergency landing near West Pointe Plaza, across from Bridgehaven Drive, according to Lt. Robert Weber, public information officer for the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office. Joo Lee was the co-pilot on board the plane.
As it was landing, the plane clipped a tractor-trailer, causing minor damage, Weber said. Because of that, the Florida Highway Patrol is treating the incident as a crash.
