Mittel to play softball at Roger Williams University
Samantha Mittel, a senior at Flagler Palm Coast High School, has signed to play softball at Roger Williams University, in Bristol, R.I.
Mittel is a four-year varsity starter, earning rookie of the year, defensive player of the year and MVP throughout her career.
Mittel will major in biology.
The Hawks are a Division III NCAA program that competes in the Commonwealth Coast Conference.
Matanzas softball wins Bell tourney
The Matanzas softball team went 3-0 over the weekend en route to winning the Bell High School Tournament.
The Lady Pirates won their first game over Trenton, 16-5, and the second game over Bronson, 11-2.
Then, in the championship, Matanzas scored one run in the top of the 10th inning to defeat Bell, 2-1.
“It was a great feeling,” said Matanzas coach Sara Novak. “We have been going there for the last three years since the majority of the team included freshmen — taking second place, but never coming in first place until this year."
Matanzas (9-4) is on a five-game winning streak.
FPC track-and-field competes at two events
The Flagler Palm Coast High School track-and-field team competed at the Deltona Invitational and the 49th-annual Bob Hayes Invitational over the weekend.
At the Deltona event, the girls team placed sixth, and the boys team finished seventh.
At the Bob Hayes meet, Kadeem Williams took third in the 300-meters hurdles, finishing in 38.19 seconds — his fastest time since the 2012 state meet.
The boys 4x400 relay team (Williams, Eddie Mutungu, Eric Mejias and Andrew Folk) took second place, finishing in 3 minutes, 22 seconds, losing another close one to defending Class 3A champs Bartram Trail by less than 1 second.
FPC girls tennis takes third at 5-Star
The Flagler Palm Coast girls tennis team placed third out of 10 teams Wednesday and Thursday at the 5-Star Conference tennis meet.
RESULTS
No. 5 singles player Christina Gerhard placed second.
No. 1 doubles Katarina Pozynak and Madison Gibbs lost in semifinals to Spruce Creek.
No. 2 doubles Mary Catherine Fanning and Carly Esposito placed second, losing to Spruce Creek.
Book worms: 38 PAL student-athletes recognized
The Flagler Police Athletic League Falcons had 38 football players and cheerleaders recognized by Pop Warner for their grades in 2012. These students had to possess a 96% GPA across all subjects to qualify as well as community service hours. Each student-athlete was invited to the All-Conference scholastic banquet last month and will also be invited to the National Scholastic banquet, in Boston, Mass., to be held in May.
