The north lawn of The Casements was packed to capacity March 24, as Adams, Cameron & Co. Realtors celebrated its 50th anniversary with the community.
There was a balloon artist, a caricaturist, a photo booth and all the ice cream guests could eat.
But there was also history there.
In 1963, Helen Adams founded Helen Adams Realty in a little office on State Road A1A, according to John Adams, current general manager and Helen Adams’ grandson.
It began as a boutique agency, Adams said, dealing mostly with condominiums. But in the 1970s, it began to grow, when Bob Adams, John Adams’ father, left his job selling computers in Miami to join the family business.
The name then changed to Adams Family Realty. After several decades, a couple mergers and few more name changes, the firm is now the largest in Volusia and Flagler counties, with six offices and more than 200 agents.
“I joined the company about 11 years ago and, over that time, we saw incredible growth,” John Adams said.
The real estate boom of the early 2000s propelled the company forward, he explained. But when the bottom fell out, times got tough. He says it was the already-established tradition of family teamwork, along with some smart acquisitions, that sustained the firm through market fluctuation.
"Now," Adams said, "(the market) is in a recovery.”
John Adams runs the business alongside his siblings, Ryan and Erin. A fourth sibling, Lauren, also used to work there.
