Hammock Beach sculptor Paul Baliker had been working on a new piece for what he said took forever, with no end in sight. To give himself a deadline, Baliker made the decision to host a public gallery opening with the new piece as the center.
The untitled piece focuses on wildlife in Florida and stood in the center of the courtyard in front of his gallery Saturday, March 23, at the first public art opening Baliker has held in his 15 years at that location.
“We’re doing the best we can to give the community something to enjoy,” Baliker said.
And that he did. In addition to Baliker’s art, work by Cynthia Spiriti and the internationally known Lundeen brothers were shown at the Baliker gallery.
But the galley was not the only place showing art this weekend.
The Hammock Business Association thought the Baliker opening was the perfect centerpiece for a two-day art festival: the Hammock Galleria Festival.
With the assistance of the Flagler County Art League, artist recruiter Mary Jo Elwood and the Hammock Business Association put together a weekend with about 30 artists in tents spread throughout several locations on A1A, in The Hammock.
“I’m about all good people and all good things and promoting small-business entrepreneurs,” Elwood said. "It’s an effort to bring the community back and connect the coastal corridor from St. Augustine to New Smyrna Beach through art.”
