S.T.E.M., innovative teaching expo coming to Arbor Day celebration
The 2013 Service Learning, S.T.E.M. and Innovative Teaching Expo is a showcase of K-12 student discoveries that resulted from involvement in classroom projects, where were aided by the Flagler County Education Foundation’s Dell Trayer grant program.

This school year, 29 Dell Trayer grant winning teachers have engaged students and inspired learning using innovative teaching techniques that include service learning concepts that invite community involvement to engage students and increase student performance in science, technology, engineering and math. Each teacher won a $1,500 grant for their school or classroom.

Those projects will be on display 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 4, during the Palm Coast Arbor Day celebration, at Town Center.

Approximately 1/3 of the grant-winning teachers focused their projects on space exploration, a district theme, coordinated by Jose Nunez. In addition to a radio conversation with astronauts, hundreds of students visited Kennedy Space Center for the first time, and a select delegation of students visited Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and the University of South Florida to speak to engineering students and tour the schools.

Dell Trayer teacher grants are funded primarily by educators who donate through a payroll deduction program. These funds are matched by funds contributed by the Flagler County Education Foundation’s statewide Consortium of Education Foundation.
