Leaping off a 15-foot jump into a lake, crawling under hurdles, surviving the triple heart attack. Oh, and mud. Lots of mud.

Those are just a few of the obstacles runners will face when they compete in the FL.ROC running obstacle challenge Saturday, May 11, in Western Flagler County.

This year marks the third race put on by brothers Joe and Danny Matuszczak in Flagler County, and the sixth race overall.

And while many of the obstacles have remained the same from last year to this year, one thing is very different: the number of participants.

This year, the Matuszczaks said, there will be more than 2,400 — triple the number of competitors from last year, when about 750 people ran the race.

About 200 runners will be released in waves every 30 minutes, with the first wave going off at 9 a.m., and the final wave going out around 1:30 p.m.

Registration will also be available on the day of the race.

And while the obstacles are challenging and winners will be declared, it’s all about having fun and challenging yourself, the Mutuszczaks said.

“The really cool thing about this type of event is that you see people who say, ‘I could never do something that extreme,’” Danny Matuszczak said. “Then you see them come out, and they actually walk away proving to themselves what they’re actually capable of.”
