FC United of Florida, a Flagler County soccer club, announced Wednesday that will become part of the Players Development Academy, a move that has many local soccer leaders excited.
FC United will now be known as PDA Florida.
PDA, a New Jersey-based soccer club, is recognized as one of the top youth soccer clubs in the United States, and was most recently rated as the No. 1 girls club and No. 10 boys club in the U.S.
The City Council recently approved a lease agreement to enter a public/private partnership with PDA to build five or six soccer fields on a parcel of land located in the Palm Coast Park Development of Regional Impact, located off U.S. 1, between Palm Coast Parkway and Matanzas Woods Parkway. The fields will be connected to the Indian Trails Sports Complex via a shell path.
Becoming part of PDA will help FC United grow youth soccer players into potential college and professional players.
“The coaching staff at FC United shares the same vision of player and people development that has made the PDA name so successful,” said Mike O’Neil, PDA’s girls director of coaching. “PDA Florida will give the top players in Florida the opportunity to come together to improve the daily training environment and to help provide an overall great experience.”
Tryouts for PDA Florida are as follows:
U16-U18 boys and girls: 6 p.m. May 28, at Indian Trails Sports Complex; and 9 a.m. June 1, at Gamble Rogers Middle School
U13-U15 boys and girls: 6 p.m. May 29, at Indian Trails Sports Comple; and 11 a.m. June 1, Gamble Rogers Middle School

Very studious: Matanzas teams recognized for grades
High school athletes are called student-athletes for a reason: Education comes first. Five teams at Matanzas High School apparently got the memo, as they were recognized this week by the Florida High School Athletic Association for team GPAs:
Softball, coached by Sara Novak (3.523 cumulative GPA); girls tennis, coached by John White (3.476 GPA); girls track-and-field, coached by James Wolfe (3.074 GPA); girls lacrosse, coached by Anna Adair (3.186 GPA); and girls flag football, coached by coached by Abude Koushakjy (3.154 GPA).
