Labor stats: Region leads state in manufacturing job growth

The Center for Business Excellence released its April jobs report May 17, which showed positive signs for the metro area comprising Deltona, Daytona Beach and Ormond Beach.

One of only five metro areas in the state to add manufacturing jobs over the year, the area showed the manufacturing industry increasing 2.4% faster than on the state level. Leisure and hospitality jobs grew 3.9% faster than the state.

“Total nonagricultural employment was up 1,200 jobs (+0.8%) over the year,” according to the report. “Statewide employment increased by 1.6% over the same time period.”

In addition to leisure and hospitality and manufacturing, three other top-10 industries gained jobs over the year: trade, transportation and utilities added a total of 800 jobs; mining, logging and construction added 100 jobs; and education and health services added 100 jobs.

Holloway sentenced to 35 years, for shooting

Zachary Holloway was sentenced to 35 years in prison May 17, as a habitual felony offender, after being found guilty of aggravated battery with a firearm March 21.

Holloway was convicted in the April 2012 shooting of the Ernest Minton near an Ormond Beach home.

The Ormond Beach City Commission’s Tuesday, June 4 meeting has been rescheduled to 7:30 p.m. Monday, June 3, to follow the commission's Capital Improvement Plan Workshop, which will be held at 5:30 p.m. in the Human Resources Training Room in City Hall.

Votran will operate a limited service schedule Memorial Day, Monday, May 27. East Volusia routes 1, 3, 4, 10, 15 and 17 will operate on the Sunday schedule. Call 761-7700.

Florida Power and Light will conduct routine tree trimming beginning late May, along rights-of-way in the city's mainland. The work will be done between 7:30 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Call 866-274-9098.
