Students statewide are scoring higher in reading and writing tests, but third-grade math results have stayed much the same overall in Florida, dipping slightly in Flagler County.
The Florida Department of Education released on Friday the results of the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test 2.0 Writing and third-grade reading and mathematics assessments. Overall, student achievement increased in 2013 in comparison to the year before.
“Over the past two years, Florida teachers and students have made incredible gains,” said Gov. Rick Scott in a statement, referencing a Quality Counts survey that said the quality of Florida’s educational system has gone from 11th in the nation to sixth this year.
Flagler County scores were aligned with statewide numbers, with some deviations: writing scores for eighth- and 10th-graders were lower for Flagler students. Overall, scores trended upward, although third-grade math scores in Flagler County declined slightly.
State school officials lauded teachers and school administrators for the trend of increasing student test scores.
"Our students, parents and teachers have worked very hard this year, and I'm pleased to see more students achieving at higher levels," said Tony Bennett, commissioner of education, in a statement. "Our teachers do a fantastic job every day to prepare students for college and careers. We will celebrate our gains and use these results to continue to work every day to improve."
