Spencer’s three TDs leads Matanzas to win in final game
Al’Kwazi Spencer tallied 172 rushing yards and three touchdowns last Thursday, leading Matanzas (3-7, 0-4 District 4-6A) to a 34-24 win over Atlantic to end the season.

Senior Stefan Tucker added 70 rushing yards and 30 receiving yards and one touchdown. Junior quarterback Jeremiah Wilson had 172 passing yards and one TD.

Coach Jeff Nettles, who just completed his first season as Pirates coach, said he saw progress toward the end of the season. Still, he knows his program has a long way to go before it becomes a consistent winner.

“At the end of the day, that is the final goal for this program,” Nettles said in regard to contending for championships. “If we are going to do that, we have to get right back to work in the offseason. Preparing to win championships is a year-round focus, and we must get that established.”

Matanzas endured many injuries this season, dropping the roster to about 30 total players.

“I’m really proud that these seniors are going out on a winning note because they laid the foundation for every class to come,” Nettles said.

Both Flagler Falcons teams win, advance

For two Flagler Falcons teams, 20-0 and East Coast Conference championships isn’t good enough. The players and coaches have dreams of national championships.

And the two teams took the next step in making that dream a reality over the weekend, as both teams won their first-round playoff games and advanced to the regional quarterfinals.

The Jr. Pee Wees defeated Clewiston Courgars, 8-0. The Jr. Midgets knocked off the Cape Youth Tornadoes, 24-14.

Both teams advance to Saturday. The Jr. Pee Wees will play the West Oarnge Wildcats at 10 a.m., and the Jr. Midgets will play the St. Cloud Bulldogs at 2 p.m. Both games will be played at Wekiva High School, in Apopka.

The teams still need help, though, with travel, hotel and food expenses. To donate to the Jr. Pee Wees team (coach Pat Buckley), go to gofundme.com/4yobdw. To donate to the Jr. Midgets team (coach Korey Kasch), go to gofundme.com/4uykfg.
