The Lady Sandcrabs return just two seniors from last year’s team, under first-year coach Avery Randolph.

It wasn’t quite the start to the season that Seabreeze girls basketball coach Avery Randolph envisioned for his team Tuesday night.

The Lady Sandcrabs (0-1) were outshot and outplayed in the first game of the season, falling to Flagler Palm Coast, 73-36.

“I expected a little bit more out of my young ladies tonight,” said Randolph, who is in his first year coaching the team. “I expected them to play a little bit harder, play with a little more camaraderie.”

Seabreeze and FPC (1-0) were tied, 4-4, a few minutes into the first quarter, but that was as close as the Lady Sandcrabs were going to get.

FPC went on a 13-point run to close out the first quarter with a 17-5 lead. FPC led at the half, 32-14.

Seabreeze is a young team, with just two seniors returning from last year’s team. Randolph said he purposely scheduled FPC as the first game in the season because he wanted his players to experience an “intense” game.

Randolph said he was happy with how the team responded in the second half, but the first two quarters essentially put the game out of reach.

“The girls want to win,” he said. “Hopefully we come out a little bit better against Atlantic on Thursday.”
