The most memorable season in Seabreeze girls cross-country history came to a close over the weekend when the Lady Sandcrabs finished third in the Class 3A state meet — the highest finish in school history.
Seabreeze was ranked sixth in its class heading into the state meet but finished third with 133 team points.
The team average was 19 minutes, 34 seconds. Estero, the state championship, had a team average of 19:06.
Alyssa Bayliff led the way, finishing 17th overall in 19:08. The rest of the team finished as follows: Kianna Bonnet (21st, 19:12), Josie Gray (23rd, 19:19), Elizabeth Murray (27th, 19:27), Forever Young (93rd, 20:42), Lea Gray (100th, 20:46) and Ashley Beers (159th, 22:43).
Young is the lone senior on the team.
This is the best year that Seabreeze girls cross-country has ever had,” coach Debora Diaz said.
Four of Seabreeze’s returning runners have run sub-20-minute races, and Diaz said there are some talented incoming freshmen, too.
“We hope to do as well or better next year if we can keep everyone healthy,” Diaz said.
Father Lopez finishes 15th, 21st at Class 1A meet
The Green Wave cross-country teams set a lot of records this season. The girls team had the lowest average in 12 years. The boys had the highest place ever in the state.
The Father Lopez girls cross-country team finished 15th in the Class 1A meet over the weekend; the boys team finished 21st.
On the girls side, Paige Ward led the way, finishing 38th overall in 20 minutes, 11 seconds. The rest of the team finished as follows: Adrienne Yaryan (69th, 21:01), Valerie Villafane (85th, 21:23), Annie Morejon (103rd, 21:53), Megan Wilson (111th, 22:07), Lauren Fox (148th, 23:51) and Emma McAskill (149th, 23:52).
Villafane is the team’s lone senior.
On the boys side, senior Adam Farmer led the way, finishing 76th overall in 18:01. The rest of the team finished as follows: Kevin Scheiber (85th, 18:12), Nick Theriault (89th, 18:15), Sebatian Siliva (137th, 19:23), Chase Massi (163rd, 20:39), Connor Nyborg (168th, 20:48) and Jackson Bush (169th, 20:55).
Seabreeze swimming takes second in region
The Seabreeze swimming team finished second in the region, falling to Sebastian River by six points. (Sebastian River had two divers score 45 points; Seabreeze had zero. Seabreeze outscored Sebastian River in the swimming events by 39 points.)
The Lady Sandcrabs took second in the region in the 200-meter medley relay and the 200-meter freestyle relay and first place in the 400-meter freestyle relay.
Marlena Pigliacampi won both the 100-meter fly and 100-meter free, qualifying for states in both.
Both the 200-meter freestyle and the 400-meter freestyle relay qualified for states, too.
The relay teams are as follows: 200-meter medley: Claire McCarthy, Marlena Pigliacampi, Kacie Burk and Miranda Creggar); 200-meter freestyle relay: Mackenzie McNamara, Madison Buckels, Ivy Rizzi and Burk); 400-meter freestyle relay: McNamara, Rizzi, Creggar and Pigliacampi).
Girls soccer: Melbourne Catholic Central 4, Father Lopez 1
Melbourne Catholic Central fired six shots on goal and scored four last Thursday, in a 4-2 win over Father Lopez.
Adelina Feuerbacher scored both of the goals for the Green Wave.
Father Lopez fell to 1-3 with the loss.
Blazers 2000 softball team wins gold
The Blazers 2000 softball team won the gold medal at the 14U NSA Stars & Stripes tournament on Nov. 3, at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex.
Three of the girls on the team are from Ormond Beach: Jessica Hanflink, Samantha Presswood and Jillian Stockhammer.
