Killian’s Gutters and Screens Inc. was named 2013 Entrepreneur of the Year for an established business Monday, Nov. 18, at the SCORE Chapter 87 recognition luncheon.
Killian’s is a home-based business in Palm Coast, which started 12 years ago.
Through the downturn of the economy and the housing crash, the busines faced a decline in sales, but owners Hans and Roseanne Killian seeked help from Volusia-Flagler SCORE. Now, their sales are back to the margins they saw in 2007, when their business was at its peak.
“This is a great example of two entrepreneurs who managed their business through a downturn and, through positive action, positioned themselves to take full advantage of an upturn in the marketplace,” said SCORE Counselor Dave Dobel.
Flower Cottage Inc., of Port Orange, was also recognized as the Lewis Goodman Start-Up Business of the Year, and counselor Lillian Conrad was recognized with the Star Award.
The success of the chapter was also recognized at the meeting: The Volusia/Flagler chapter was named district chapter of the year for North Central Florida, as well as being part of the Top 25 fastest growing chapters. From October 2012 to September 2013, the chapter handled more than 1,000 cases for the first time in history, which is a 33% increase over the previous year. Its workshop participation also grew 36%, with nearly 1,500 attendees.
