COPS CORNER: Gas stations suffer counterfieting and $1.99 wine heist

In this edition of Cops Corner: Gas station gets smoked by fake fifties; clerk investigates possible $1.99 wine caper; an angry tree wages all-out war on a cop car; and, bandits stategize masterful theft of a wallet a woman left on parking lot pavement.

Nov. 10

Faking it

3:15 p.m. — 1500 Block of N. U.S. 1. Fraud. The victim said the suspect came in and tried to buy cigarettes with a $50 bill, but the victim did not realize the bill was fake until the suspect left. The suspect came in again later and tried to buy cigarettes again with another $50 bill, but this time, the victim told her she knew the money was fake.

The suspect acted shocked and, in response, the victim explained that the police had been called. Before leaving, the suspect said she got the money at a garage sale.

Nov. 12

Possible $1.99 grand wine theft

8:42 p.m. — 500 Block of S. Atlantic Avenue. Suspicious Incident. The suspect came into the store, went straight to the coolers and grabbed a Mike’s Hard Lemonade and what appeared to be a mini bottle of Sutter’s Home wine, valued at $1.99. The suspect then looked around before walking to the cashier.

The suspect then had to go out to her car to get her ID, and when she came back inside, she picked up a few more items. The victim asked the suspect about the bottle of wine and the suspect said she put it back. He said the suspect appeared calm and did not leave the store for another 15 minutes, which seemed odd. The victim said the suspect frequents the store and he doesn’t want to press charges because he was not sure she removed anything but wanted it documented.

Nov. 13

Arbor assault

2:03 a.m. — 1 Block of Glen Arbor Park. Information. While an officer was investigating a possible home burglary, a large oak limb fell on his patrol vehicle. The incident was witnessed by three officers, and the branch left a large dent in the car's roof. The car was still drivable and all emergency equipment functioned.

Nov. 10

'My wallet's gone! My wallet's gone!'

7:36 p.m. — 1600 Block of West Granada Boulevard.Lost Property. The victim called police and said someone may have stolen her wallet earlier in the day, and she was currently in Gainesville. She said she last saw the dark brown, men’s, leather wallet, valued at $100, on the hood of her vehicle at a gas station on West Granada Boulevard while she was pumping fuel. She said she then pulled away from the pump and made it to the exit of the lot when she realized the wallet was missing.

The employee at the station said no one turned in a wallet, and nothing was found in a search of the area. The wallet contained two debit cards, a credit card, a driver’s license and a social security card. The officer advised her to report the cards stolen as soon as possible.
