On paper, it was probably over before it started. On the field, it was over within the first eight minutes of the first quarter.
Mainland cruised past Deltona, 62-0, on Friday night, giving the Buccaneers’ fans a Homecoming win and a district win. With the win, Mainland improved to 5-1 (2-0 in District 9-6A).
It started quick for Mainland on Friday night. Trey Rodriguez picked up 20 yards on his first carry of the game. Just two plays later, he plowed through the middle of the field for a 58-yard touchdown run just 1 minute, 9 seconds into the game.
Three minutes later, Mainland wide receiver Kaylo Hannah took the wildcat handoff from Rodriguez around the left edge and galloped into the end zone for a 35-yard touchdown run.
From there, the rout was on. Mainland went on to score 48 first-half points.
“It’s good to let the young guys play,” Mainland coach Scott Wilson said after the game. “They work so hard all week — the other guys, you know, always get the chance to get in. Just to see them smile and be happy is the greatest thing in football, so we’re proud of that.”
Mainland hits the road next week to play Oviedo, which is currently on a two-game losing streak after its 33-21 loss to University on Oct. 4. Oviedo opened the season with four straight wins.
Scott said Oviedo is currently ranked above Mainland in Central Florida.
“Up to this point, we’re real happy with the kids putting up points, playing disciplined, having fun and playing ball,” Wilson said.
