The local Relay for Life has a new name this year. Relay for Life Flagler County will pull together the two Relays in the county, Flagler Beach and Flagler, for one event.

“The biggest thing about the merger is that the community and the participants really wanted a joint effort so we could have a huge event, something that the entire county could rally behind,” said Shane Bevilacqua, American Cancer Society staff partner.

Flagler County used to do one combined event, but Flagler Beach broke off in 2010 to do its own. After three years, the ACS staff and volunteers decided that everyone enjoyed the big, united Flagler County movement better.

“This is a community that relays, and there is one place to do it,” Bevilacqua said. “We are trying to get not just Palm Coast and Flagler Beach but also Bunnell and Beverly Beach involved.”

Another change in the event this year is that it will go back to a Friday/Saturday format beginning 5 p.m. April 4 and running through the night to April 5. The move from April to May was done in hopes to miss big rain storms that have hindered the overnight event in the past.

Last year, the Relay for Life Flagler raised $75,000 and drew 55 teams with almost 2,000 participants. The top two teams were Dominic’s Deli and The Legend and the King. With the merger, the goal for the Flagler County event is 60 teams and $92,000 raised. As of this week, there are already 26 teams registered and almost $3,500 raised.

Relay for Life Flagler County will hold a kickoff event 6 p.m. Oct. 16, at the Knights of Columbus. Everyone who wants to be involved in the event is invited. The theme for the kickoff is football and the theme for the 2014 event will be voted on that night.

Teams may register by attending the kickoff or by visiting www.Relayforlife.org/flaglerfl. The team registration donation has changed this year from $100 to $10.
