The girls golf teams at Flagler Palm Coast and Matanzas met for a match on Monday at the Palm Harbor Golf Club. But because Matanzas only has three players, it was more of a tuneup for districts, which are slated for next week.
Flagler Palm Coast (11-6) has had success on the course this year with an inexperienced group of golfers, coach Phil DeAugustino said.
The Lady Bulldogs have three seniors who are in their first full year of the sport and who have helped their team to its winning record.
But DeAugustino also has a crop of younger players who will help the program continue to be successful over the coming years.
FPC took third place at the Flagler-Volusia tournament out of nine teams and fourth in the 5-Star Conference tournament (Flagler and Volusia schools).
“We go into districts with the goal of improving our scores and playing competitively,” DeAugustino said.
That hasn’t been the case for Matanzas this year, which has just three golfers playing for first-year coach David Challice.
“We needed four players to be considered a team,” Challice said. “The girls have really played great this season and have shown some good improvements in their individual games.”
Because the Lady Pirates only have three players — Sara Komanowski (senior), Lindsay Sanchez (junior) and Cassandra Vincent (freshman) — the team won’t be able to qualify for a district championship. The golfers could advance as individuals, though.
“I am hoping the team will grow for next year so we can have a full squad for our matches,” Challice said.
Matanzas and FPC both compete in their district tournaments on Oct. 14.
