The Buddy Taylor Middle School Bunnell FFA A Team took home the title at the District FFA Forestry Career Development Event for the 14th year. The Bunnell Senior FFA A Team, at Flagler Palm Coast High School, also earned the district title, making it their seventh consecutive win.

District VI includes FFA chapters from Volusia and Flagler counties. Both teams will travel to Perry, in November, for the State Final.

Austin Davis was named high individual for the senior division. As a graduating senior, he has been the high individual at the district level six times — every year he competed.

Team members are as follows: Bunnell Sr. A Team, Davis, Miranda Kuleski, McKenzie Smith, Katie Freddell; Bunnell Sr. B Team, Kathryn Gordon, Bryan Simmons, Chris Cashera, Allysa Austin; Buddy Taylor Middle School A Team, Paige Brewer, Greyson Smith, Jerry Holmes, MacKenzie Latham; and Buddy Taylor B Team, Sarah Baugher and Rileigh Harrison.

Flagler County Education Foundation receives more than $20,000 in grants
The Consortium of Florida Education Foundations, in conjunction with the Florida Department of Education, recently awarded the Flagler County Education Foundation $16,386.21 in matching funds through the School District Education Foundation Matching Grant Program.

Grant funds are matched by local dollars through contributions made to the Flagler County Education Foundation by generous Flagler Schools employees and private donations from the community. Twenty-four teachers have received first-round funding for STEM learning that include projects to study the oceans, discover alternative energy resources and protect the environment. In addition, matching funds will be used to stimulate students’ creative writing in six elementary schools through the Josh Crews Writing Project, named in memory and honor of Josh Crews, an avid reader, writer and story teller who died several years ago in a car accident.

Florida is a national leader in this matching grant program for K-12 education with $25.3 million in matching funds provided to date.

The Flagler County Education Foundation was also awarded $5,000 through the Innovation Generation Grant from the Motorola Solutions Foundation, the charitable arm of Motorola Solutions Inc. The project is coordinated by District STEM Coordinator Jose Nunez and was one of nine chosen from among 21 applicants.

The project goal is to give middle and high school students a real-life opportunity to assist professional engineers and amateur radio enthusiasts from the Palm Coast Amateur Radio Club to design and build a tethered weather balloon for aerial surveillance and two-way communications for Flagler County Emergency Services Agencies.

In addition, students will collect real-time temperature, humidity and barometric pressure data as well as collect biological samples of insects and pollen at different altitudes.

The first test launch is scheduled for the middle of November. The second launch with a full payload is scheduled for April.
